ഖത്തര്‍ ഭരണാധികാരി ഷെയ്ഖ് തമീം ബിന്‍ ഹമദ് അല്‍ താനിയുടെ സഹോദരന്‍ ജോവാന്‍ ബിന്‍ ഹമാദ് അല്‍ താനിയാണ് വനിതാ റഫിമാര്‍ക്ക് ഹാന്‍ഡ്‌ഷെയ്ക്ക് നല്‍കാന്‍ വിസമതിച്ചത്. ഖത്തര്‍ ഒളിംപിക് കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റ് കൂടിയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം.
മത്സരത്തിന് ശേഷം വനിതാ റഫറിമാരായ എഡിന അല്‍വ്‌സും, ന്യൂസയും ഫിസ്റ്റ്ബംപിനായി ഷെയ്ക്കിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹം പിന്നോട്ട് മാറി. എന്നാല്‍ പുരുഷ റഫറിമാര്‍ക്ക് ഹസ്തദാനം നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
